John O’Callaghan
Owner and CEO of Premier Caregiver Services
John O’Callaghan is the Founder & CEO of Premier Caregiver Services, and has spent nearly two decades helping seniors and families navigate the challenges of aging and dementia care. His role prioritizes research for the most relevant and advanced practices in dementia caregiving and home care services. He takes a leading role in participating in collaborations with other independent, non-franchise senior care agencies to explore innovations in the sphere of senior care. This allows him to consistently grow Premier Caregiver Services’s resources to provide better client care, caregiver retention, and caregiver training.
John’s career began in 2007, when he founded Evalusafe, a company that partnered with occupational therapists to provide home safety assessments and recommend modifications to help seniors age safely in place. Soon after, he branched out and joined Premier Homecare, a Louisville-based durable medical equipment (DME) company, as a consultant to help launch retail stores featuring both medical and home accessibility products. After successfully opening the first location, he became Vice President of Retail for Home Accessibility and went on to open and manage five stores across the region.
During that time, Premier Homecare also partnered with a non-medical caregiving division, which was an area that quickly captured John’s passion and purpose to get to where he is today. In 2011, John began leading that caregiving division, and by 2015, he acquired ownership of it and established what is now Premier Caregiver Services. Under his leadership, Premier has become one of Louisville’s most trusted home care providers that specializes in dementia care and other in-home caregiving needs.
In addition to his professional experience, John has extensive hands-on experience with dementia and Alzheimer’s care, leadership in caregiver training and dementia-specific programming, and participates in continuous professional development through national home care CEO peer groups. His favorite quote is,
“Take on the challenging cases others can’t or won’t.”
John believes that every client teaches a new lesson and deepens the understanding that we have about dementia care and how it affects different individuals. By taking on the difficult cases, Premier can learn better ways to keep more families together at home.
At the heart of his passion, John found his purpose caring for his mother, who had Alzheimer’s disease. That firsthand experience gave him insight and understanding of the challenges that families face. With all of his experience in the senior care industry, it inspired him to dedicate his career to improving the dementia care that Louisville has available. In the same way that he wanted the best care for his own mother, he wanted to help other families find that safety with the in-home care that Premier Caregiver Services offers. He is particularly proud of developing resources that he didn’t have, like a booklet and coaching guide to help adult children overcome their parents’ refusal of care.
A lifelong Louisvillian, John is an avid slalom water skier who often starts his day on the Ohio River at sunrise. He is also a snow skier, mountain biker, and long-time member of the Rotary Club of Louisville and is actively engaged in local initiatives through The Alzheimer’s Association.
